Background of the Study
Smoking remains one of the leading causes of preventable diseases worldwide, significantly affecting lung function and increasing the risk of respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and emphysema (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). The harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke cause inflammation, lung tissue damage, and reduced pulmonary function over time (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). Despite global and national efforts to reduce smoking prevalence, tobacco use remains prevalent in certain regions, including parts of Nigeria, where cultural and social factors influence smoking habits (Usman & Bello, 2024).
Jigawa State, with its predominantly rural population, has seen an increase in tobacco consumption, particularly among young adults and middle-aged individuals (Olaniyan et al., 2023). The long-term impact of smoking on lung function in this region, however, remains underexplored. Limited awareness, inadequate enforcement of tobacco control policies, and misconceptions about the health risks of smoking contribute to the problem.
This study aims to investigate smoking habits in Jigawa State and their impact on lung function, providing empirical evidence to support public health interventions and smoking cessation programs.
Statement of the Problem
The rising prevalence of smoking in Jigawa State poses a significant public health challenge. Many smokers are unaware of the long-term effects of tobacco use on their respiratory health, leading to increased cases of chronic lung diseases (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). Healthcare facilities in the state have reported growing numbers of patients with smoking-related illnesses, yet there is limited research quantifying the impact of smoking on lung function in the region (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024).
Furthermore, existing tobacco control measures are poorly enforced, and smoking cessation programs remain insufficient. Without concrete data on smoking prevalence and its direct impact on lung function, it is difficult to develop effective public health policies (Usman & Bello, 2024). This study seeks to address this gap by examining smoking habits and their effects on lung function in Jigawa State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of smoking among different demographic groups in Jigawa State.
2. To assess the impact of smoking on lung function using pulmonary function tests.
3. To evaluate public awareness and attitudes toward the health risks associated with smoking.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of smoking among different age groups in Jigawa State?
2. How does smoking affect lung function among smokers compared to non-smokers?
3. What is the level of awareness about the health risks of smoking in Jigawa State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Smoking prevalence is high among young adults and middle-aged individuals in Jigawa State.
2. Long-term smokers exhibit significantly reduced lung function compared to non-smokers.
3. Public awareness of smoking-related health risks is low in Jigawa State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adult smokers and non-smokers in Jigawa State, assessing their lung function through medical evaluations. Limitations may include self-reported data inaccuracies and challenges in accessing medical records.
Definitions of Terms
• Smoking: The act of inhaling and exhaling smoke from burning tobacco products.
• Lung Function: A measure of respiratory efficiency, including lung capacity and airflow.
